The Organizing Committee of the Japan Olive Oil Prize, one of the leading global olive oil competitions, has announced the winners of the Japan Olive Oil Prize (JOOP) and JOOP Design Award in Tokyo on the 16th of May 2022.
This year JOOP celebrated its 10th anniversary with 500 participating labels from 21 different countries.
Turkey was represented this year on the panel for the olive oil prize by certified olive oil taster and international judge Birsen Pehlivan, and food design researcher Sibel Kutlusoy as a juror for the JOOP design award.
Opening up to global markets
Davide Fantoni, the General Manager of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Japan, emphasized in his opening speech that Japan ranked as the top consumer of EVOO among Asian countries and 8th globally. He explained JOOP’s primary objective as promoting and educating consumers on the beneficial effects of EVOO. He also noted that they were currently coordinating promotional activities to give visibility to the award-winning oils in large retailers such as Hankyu and Isetan, the two most important department stores in Japan.
International jurors
This year, international certified jurors Aida Lazzez (Tunisia), Antonio G. Lauro (Italy), Birsen Pehlivan (Turkey), Carola Dümmer (Chile), Hiromi Nakamura (Japan), Konstantinos Liris (Greece), M. Angeles Calvo Fandos (Spain), Mariko Shimada (Japan) ve Miciyo Yamada (Japan) have tasted the oils and selected the winners.
As part of JOOP, for the last 3 years, the JOOP Design Award contest has been rewarding producers who stand out in conveying the identity of their product through the bottle, logo and label designs. Once again this year the competition sees the participation of a panel of internationally renowned creatives: Adrián Pierini from Argentina, Piero Lissoni ve Giovanna Talocci from Italy, Nini Andrade Silva from Portugal and Sibel Kutlusoy from Turkey.
And the winners
The rigorous selection resulted in the proclamation of the winners for the Organic, Monovarietal, Blend and Flavored categories. According to the scores obtained, oils have received the Best in Country, Best in Class, Gold and Silver awards. Due to its scores, Hermus Memecik has been chosen as the best EVOO in Turkey, and many labels from a total of 35 Turkish producers have received gold and silver medals.
